Checking you Blood pressure correctly just as important as taking you medication. Important points on taking blood pressure include timing, position, side and acuracy pf the measuring instrument.
1. Timing
- Consistency is Key: Take your blood pressure at the same time each day, ideally in the morning before taking any medications or eating, and in the evening.
- Rest Before Measuring: Sit quietly for at least 5 minutes before taking a measurement to ensure your body is relaxed and at rest.
- Avoid Certain Activities: Avoid smoking, drinking caffeine, or exercising at least 30 minutes before measuring your blood pressure, as these can temporarily raise your blood pressure.
2. Position
- Seated Position: Sit in a comfortable chair with your back supported and feet flat on the floor. Your legs should not be crossed.
- Arm Placement: Rest your arm on a table or flat surface, keeping it at heart level. The arm should be relaxed, with the palm facing upward.
- Use the Same Arm: Always use the same arm for consistency, usually the left arm unless directed otherwise by your healthcare provider.
3. Side
- Choosing the Right Arm: If there's a significant difference in blood pressure readings between your arms, use the arm with the higher reading for future measurements.
- Check Both Arms Initially: If it’s your first time measuring, check both arms and note any differences. Typically, the arm with the higher reading should be used for consistent monitoring.
4. Accuracy of the Measuring Instrument
- Calibrate Regularly: Ensure your digital blood pressure monitor is calibrated regularly according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Correct Cuff Size: Use the correct cuff size for your arm. A cuff that's too small or too large can give inaccurate readings.
- Battery Check: Ensure the device has sufficient battery power to avoid inaccurate results.
Additional Tips:
- Multiple Readings: Take 2-3 readings, a few minutes apart, and average the results to get a more accurate picture.
- Document Results: Keep a record of your readings to track trends and share them with your healthcare provider.
